Dusty's New Job!!

Dusty recently accepted a job as Project Manager with Goodfellow Brothers, Inc. He is very excited about the opportunities that present him, as Goodfellow Brothers does 90% of the Earthwork in Maui.

Included in Dusty's recent job promotion was an upgrade in trucks. He is now sporting a 2005 F150 (pictured above), courtesy of his company. Unfortunately someday when Dusty says good bye to Maui, he will also say good bye to his new set of wheels.

Olowalu Petroglyphs Hike

Our friend Frank joined us today to check out the petroglyphs in Olowalu. The soft lava found at this site made an excellent tablet for recording thoughts in ancient times. Some petroglyphs show several figures grouped together and are thought to depict families. The human figures with large bodies are probably the Ali'i (royalty) and the stick figures may be the commoners. Many different animals, canoes and tools are also depicted.

After checking out the petroglyphs, we hiked onward toward the valley between the West Maui Mountains. An adventurous afternoon all in all.

Pictured above are some of the petroglyphs thought to be Ali'i. And to the right are Dusty, Frank & Sato taking a little breather in the stream we came across. For more pics of the hike, click below.

Weekend in Hana

HANA TRIP PHOTO ALBUM

With our guests Andy & Angel back home in Florida, Dusty & I decided it might be fun to spend a little down time camping in Hana. For those of you wondering what Hana is, Hana is located on the East side of Maui and known to some as "Heaven on Earth." The rainforest provides lots of waterfalls, greenery, and just an all around amazing setting!

Everything from our sunrise at Koki Beach, to discovering the Blue Pool, and hiking Pipiwai Trail... was incredible. If you have the time, please check out our photo album (link below).

By the way, Pipiwai Trail is located at 7 Sacred Pools (a hot spot for tourists and locals alike). After hiking Pipiwai Trail, Dusty & I decided to make it mandatory for all of our future guests. We had no idea just how good this hike was. We walked through Bamboo Forests, saw lots of Waterfalls along the way, and ended up at Waimoku Falls.... the most breath taking of them all!

With all that said, if you would like to check out our photo album, click below:

Comando Hike!!

On Monday, July 11, 2005, we embarked on the ultimate Maui adventure: Comando. Scaling sides of waterfalls, climbing through lava tubes, jumping off 50 ft. cliffs... it was insane! And we all survived.

Longboarding...

Maui's famous summer south swell hasn't lived up to what it has been in years past. But there is always a little wave for longboarding. So Dusty & Andy put there shortboards aside and decided to break out the long boards this weekend. We all went and gave it a shot. Becca even stood up (pictured above)!
Later on that afternoon, we took our guests to our secret spot at Honolua Bay and picked some pineapples for a snack. To check out pics, click the above photo album.

West Maui Road Trip

Becca & Angel drove around the entire West part of Maui today! Lots of fun. We checked out Dragon's Teeth... which was Becca's first time, too! Dragon's teeth was created from one of the last lava flows on Maui. However, the lava here is a little different from the rest of the lava on Maui - it is much lighter, denser, and fine-grained. The wind sweeping over the point caused the lava to harden in an upward fashion. The jagged points of this formation look like dragon's teeth, thus the name. Angel is pictured above at dragon's teeth.

After checking out Dragon's Teeth, we went onward to Nakahale Blowhole. Angel was able to capture a pretty good video from our visit, you are welcomed to check it out (may take a while to download):

From the blowhole, we just kept driving and ended up at Iao Valley. Enjoy our pics from the trip below:

July 7th:

Andy & Angel did a bit of exploring and ventured further into West Maui and checked out the Olivine Pools. Angel got some great shots as she hiked down to this area. After a little exploring, they headed back to the familiar Ka'anapali Beach, where they took a Sunset Trip with Trilogy.

la perouse bay

We spent the day at La Perouse Bay in South Maui. This lava strewn, almost alien looking bay is the result of the last volcanic eruption here. Pretty Cool!
Pictured above are Dusty & Andy catching up on old times.

Makawao 4th of July Rodeo

Every Fourth of July weekend for 50 years, the Maui Roping Club has been hosting the Makawao Rodeo. This event is Hawaii's largest paniolo competition. More than 300 boot-loving cowboys from around the world come to the Valley Isle to kick up plenty of dust as they show off their cowhand skills in rough stock and roping events.

Do you really think we would miss this!! Had to see it. After the rodeo festivities we took it easy at Ho'okipa Beach.

Upcountry Maui

Andy & Angel tagged along with Becca today as she interviewed with King Kekaulike High School in Upcountry Maui.... and, GOOD NEWS! Becca accepted a job as a school counselor for the upcoming school year. Woo Hoo!

With a new job to celebrate, we headed down the street to Maui's Winery at Tedeschi Vineyards for a little wine tasting. We sipped on everything from dessert wines made of pineapples to the champagne chosen for the former President Reagan's inauguration. Good stuff!

Becca also took Andy and Angel on a little tour of the backside of Haleakala.
